Barbara Bernard is a regular volunteer in the child life and expressive therapies department at Norton Children’s Hospital, helping with kids’ playtime, supporting parents and helping others any way she can. She has been an active volunteer with Norton Children’s Hospital for over 11 years.

“Over her decade of service, Barbara has donated thousands of hours of her time. She is there to make sure that children aren’t alone and have a friendly and smiling face by their bedside,” said Anne Cannon, director of events and donor relations for Norton Healthcare.

Barbara’s drive to give back comes from a personal place. In 2003, her 14-year-old son, Garrett, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Fortunately, his medical team at Norton Children’s Hospital was able to remove the tumor. Today he is a healthy 29-year-old.

Years after her son’s experience with the hospital, Barbara made it her mission to help families facing similar hardships. She signed up to volunteer.

“Being able to convey to families that we have gone through a similar situation and relate to them can help,” Barbara said. “It is both physically and emotionally draining when your child is sick, and I understand that.”

Barbara also helps the Children’s Hospital Foundation by serving on the Bourbon & Bowties™ planning committee and volunteering at fundraising events throughout the year. Additionally, she has volunteered with several other organizations helping to support individuals and the community.

For all she does, Barbara has been nominated by Norton Healthcare and recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Louisville Chapter as Philanthropist of the Year.
