Refugee Health Assessment (RHA)

Refugee children arriving in the United States can receive a comprehensive health screening known as a refugee health assessment at Norton Children’s Medical Group – NuLu, in coordination with local refugee agencies such as Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Catholic Charities of Louisville and the International Rescue Committee. The assessment is billed to insurance, there is no fee charged to families for this appointment. Transportation is provided by the agency, and interpreter services are provided. This assessment includes:

  1. General health assessment, including vision, hearing and dental screenings
  2. Identification and treatment of immediate health needs
  3. Diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases
  4. Immunizations per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines
  5. Medication education and management
  6. Orientation to the U.S. health care system
  7. Coordination of dental and follow-up care

While refugee health assessments typically are coordinated with the local refugee agencies, other types of new immigrants to the U.S. are also welcome to schedule an appointment for their child’s first checkup. Be sure to bring any records, insurance card and immunizations history to your first appointment.

Follow-up Care

We encourage refugee families who have completed their health assessments to follow up with us for catch-up immunizations, growth assessment and mental health check-ups. Annual well-child checkups are recommended for all children. Feel free to schedule your dental and medical appointments on the same day for convenience.

The new COVID-19 vaccine is required for the green card (permanent resident card) process. If you choose NOT to have this new vaccine or a booster (if due), you are required to complete Form I-601, Application for Waiver of Grounds of Inadmissibility, and submit it to your attorney.

Civil Surgeon Services

Refugee children eligible for civil surgeon services can access assistance, including Form I-698 completion. Bring your valid government-issued photo ID to the appointment for signing the Form I-698 document. If the child is age 14 years or older, they must be present to sign their own form and must have their own identification. You will receive the signed forms in a sealed envelope to send with your other documents. Consult with your appropriate agency and/or legal team.
