The Norton Children’s Heart Institute Heart Transplant Clinic offers a holistic, convenient approach to care after a heart transplant. The weekly clinic allows patients to see a multidisciplinary team of clinicians from across the Norton Children’s and UofL Physicians network.
Norton Children’s Hospital has been a pioneer in pediatric heart transplant surgery. The hospital was the country’s second site of a successful infant heart transplant and the first in Kentucky, performed in 1986. Our program has some of the oldest living pediatric heart transplant patients — three individuals who received transplants in 1987.

Children can have many complicated health issues after a heart transplant. This clinic gives children and families access to heart transplant and heart failure specialists, a psychologist, a social worker and other services in one convenient location.
In addition, patients and their families at Norton Children’s Heart Institute, affiliated with the University of Louisville, are assigned a nurse navigator who works to make sure they have resources to ease a stressful time and connect to the best care available. The nurse navigator’s job is to make sure the child’s care is convenient, accessible, friendly and as easy as possible.
