Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of connective tissue disorders that affect every organ system. They are genetic disorders, and most patients have a strong family history of hypermobility (joints have a wider range of motion than normal), joint dislocation and skin fragility (skin can be damaged easily).
There are several types of EDS. The most common type is called hypermobile EDS. Most types of EDS are diagnosed using genetic testing.
Many patients with EDS have significant medical and behavioral needs. Successful treatment means seeing many health care providers from various specialties, including orthopedics, rheumatology, psychology, psychiatry and physical therapy.
The Norton Children’s Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Clinic improves access to health care by minimizing trips to and from multiple providers and creating a medical home for EDS patients.
We offer a holistic approach to treatment, including use of physical and occupational therapies; orthotics; and pain relief regimens, while also ensuring that cardiac, nutritional, gastrointestinal and orthopedic complications are monitored and managed. We also provide a space where concerns can be raised without fear of judgment.
The clinic is staffed with board-certified, fellowship-trained specialists with experience in treating children with EDS. These include:
