In the overnight hours, while most are sleeping, the ovens at Rosa De Oro bakery in Louisville are hard at work. For Yolanda Acosta and Alonso Lopez, baking isn’t just a business — it’s a labor of love, a family tradition and a way to give back to the community they cherish.

Yolanda and Alonso, married for 13 years, are the owners of Rosa De Oro, known for its fresh, preservative-free breads. From artisan loaves to table buns and baguettes, their products are crafted with care and delivered to more than 45 restaurants across Louisville.

But some of their most meaningful deliveries go to a different kind of destination.

Each week, Rosa De Oro donates 100 freshly baked loaves — valued at nearly $500 each week — to Norton Children’s food pantries.

“These aren’t day-old leftovers. They’re intentionally baked with the families coming to the hospital in mind,” said Yolanda, who serves on the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation board of trustees. “When I learned of the food pantries, I was moved by the idea that the [doctor’s offices] were not only providing medical care, but also access to food for individuals facing food insecurity. I knew Alonso and I could help.”

Their commitment to donating began during the pandemic, when restaurant orders slowed and uncertainty loomed. Instead of cutting back, Yolanda and Alonso leaned into their values, donating bread to other community organizations and continuing to bake for those in need.

Today, their weekly donations help nourish families navigating difficult times — providing not just food, but a sense of dignity.

“We are truly grateful to have dedicated business owners like Yolanda and Alonso — representing women- and minority-owned businesses — giving back to Norton Children’s,” said Lynnie Meyer, R.N., Ed.D., FAHP, CFRE, senior vice president and chief development officer, Norton Children’s. “Their involvement in our food pantries and their commitment to our community is both inspiring and deeply appreciated.”

About our food pantries

Norton Children’s 26 food pantries provide healthy food options and baby supplies to patients who are facing food insecurity. Many of these pantries were started from staff recognizing the need for resources for patients. Food pantries are located in provider offices and hospitals.
