Norton Children’s pharmacy locations are staffed by pediatric-trained pharmacists who offer medication management that’s designed “just for kids.” Our pediatric pharmacists partner to meet the needs of every patient by working collaboratively with hospital care teams.

What Are the Benefits of a Pediatric Pharmacist for Your Child’s Care?

Medication dosing is much different for children and teens than for adults. Norton Children’s pharmacists are specially trained in dosing for pediatric patients by age and size.  They work to customize each dose for your child with the proper formulation to ensure compliance, efficacy and safety.

Our pharmacists work collaboratively with services throughout the hospital to provide care. As part of a whole care team, our pharmacists visit patients daily as part of multidisciplinary rounds.

Our pediatric pharmacists monitor children taking high-risk medications, antibiotics and chemotherapy, looking for any signs of drug interactions or allergies. They provide the latest information about medications to other health care professionals and assist with pain management. They also offer age-appropriate education for children and families.

Norton Children’s Pharmacy Accreditations

Norton Children’s Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program

Norton Children’s Hospital offers a two-year pharmacy residency program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Our program provides residents with a comprehensive experience that focuses exclusively on children, from newborns to young adults, across all specialties.

Norton Children’s offers two of only a few specialized residency training programs for pediatrics in critical care and oncology available in the country. Learn more about the Norton Children’s Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program.

Meds to Beds Program

Our Meds to Beds program allows patients to have their prescriptions filled and delivered to their room before they leave the hospital. This allows you to have all the items you need when you and your child leave the hospital so your first stop can be home. You also can pick up your child’s medications in person at the pharmacy. The Meds to Beds program is available at all Norton Healthcare hospitals.

Norton Specialty Pharmacy

Norton Specialty Pharmacy offers medications that can be difficult to find for complex, rare and chronic health conditions.

Because of the complex nature of some conditions and their treatment, patients who use our specialty pharmacy typically need more assistance than a traditional pharmacy would provide. Our specialty pharmacists provide a higher level of service, including regular consultations with you, while also collaborating with your child’s provider.

Specialty pharmacy team members will consult with you regularly regarding your child’s medications and treatment plan, making sure you get your child’s prescriptions quickly and accurately.

Additional services include:

  • Personalized counseling and medication review by skilled specialty pharmacists
  • Prescription refill reminders so that you don’t miss a dose
  • Free delivery
  • Help with insurance and financial questions
  • Free support tools and products, such as pillboxes, medication calendars and educational information

How to Use Our Services

Filling a New Prescription

In many cases, your provider will send a prescription to our pharmacy when your child’s treatment is determined in the office or clinic. We also will work with your child’s provider to obtain a new prescription at your request.

Ordering Refills

A member of our team will contact you when a refill is due, several days before you run out of medication. If you need a refill before we contact you, call (502) 559-1310 or (866) 616-8088. We will coordinate pickup or delivery of your child’s prescription.

Unavailable Medications

Norton Specialty Pharmacy has access to and stocks a wide variety of specialty medications. In the event that we are not able to obtain your child’s medication, we will work with you and another pharmacy to ensure you have access to it.

Insurance

Norton Specialty Pharmacy is able to accept and bill most insurance plans. If your insurance requires you to use another pharmacy, we will work with you and the other pharmacy to ensure the prescription is moved and you have access to your child’s medication.

Patient Management Services

We encourage all patients to use our patient management services. We especially encourage patients who are taking high-risk medications or who have difficulty following their medication plan to participate in this free service. When we first speak to you, we will offer to enroll your child in the program. Enrollment is completely up to you, and you may opt out at any time.

Copays and Assistance

Norton Specialty Pharmacy will work with your insurance company to bill for your child’s medication. If any copay is not affordable, we will work with you and available financial support resources, possibly lowering your costs. You will always be informed of the exact amount that you are responsible to pay for your prescription.
