Meet Dr. Star Nixon, Norton Children’s newest pediatric orthopedic surgeon

From a young age, she wanted to do something to help people

Star L. Nixon, M.D., MPH, is the newest addition at Norton Children’s Orthopedics of Louisville. As a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, she is available to treat a wide variety of bone and joint conditions that affect children and teenagers.

From a young age, Dr. Nixon knew she wanted to do something to help people. She had watched her mother go through medical school when Dr. Nixon was 11.

“I saw her joys and struggles during that process,” Dr. Nixon said. “So when I started out in public health research and got frustrated just sitting at a desk, I decided to go to medical school.”

Making an impact

While in medical school, Dr. Nixon discovered orthopedics. She liked that the specialty was about improving function and removing pain almost immediately.

“I always appreciated doing things with my hands, so it’s very satisfying to physically fix someone to help them walk again,” she said. “It’s a results-oriented field, and many orthopedists value that aspect. It’s not a pill you’re monitoring; with surgery, you can make an immediate impact on someone’s life. You’re able to help someone regain the ability to do the things they love, relatively quickly.”

Her favorite part of her residency training was pediatric orthopedics, and that’s when she decided she wanted to focus on kids’ care. Pediatric orthopedists specialize in treating a wide variety of conditions that affect the growing bones and muscles of children and teenagers; from sprains and fractures to birth defects, bone diseases, walking problems, scoliosis and more.

Unwinding with husband and children

“I especially like working with kids because they’re resilient and fun,” she said.

Dr. Nixon and her husband recently celebrated the birth of their second child.

“My job can be demanding, so I like spending a lot of time with my family to unwind,” she said.

The Nixons also have two large dogs and enjoy sports, including hiking, skiing and mountain biking. Dr. Nixon practices yoga and enjoys cooking as well.
