The long days of summer are wonderful for vacations and family time but also present plenty of opportunities to get hurt. During the summer months, hospital emergency departments are filled with kids injured in playground accidents, at swimming pools and on the roadways. Five of the most common injuries involving children are:

Accidents involving bikes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, send more than 500,000 people in the U.S. to emergency departments each year. Experts say head trauma is typically the most serious injury from bike accidents, which is why helmets are critical. Other accidents involving children could be prevented with better adult supervision, especially near water or when motorized vehicles like ATVs are being used.
Children aren’t the only ones who get themselves into summertime trouble. Adults, just like kids, can get burned at the family cookout. Every year fire departments respond to more than 8,200 blazes started by grills.
Then there are the other kinds of burns, like sunburns and blisters. Ranella Hirsch, M.D., a Boston dermatologist, says more important than how high the SPF is how often the sunscreen is applied. Hirsch says if sunscreen is applied every 90 minutes, many bad burns could be prevented. Hirsch also recommends a milk bath to soothe a sunburn. Use equal parts cool water and whole milk, soak it up with a washcloth and apply the cloth to the burned skin.
“The proteins in the milk will take away the sting immediately,” Dr. Hirsch said.
Other summertime mishaps can be prevented with a little forethought, like stretching before a workout or wearing appropriate shoes for a long walk or trip to the zoo. Before cutting the grass, make sure the area to be mowed is free of sticks, metal and rocks that could become missiles when hit by the lawnmower blades. Every year, 80,000 people in the U.S. need hospital care because of lawnmower accidents.
When you’re outside for very long periods, wear bug repellant to keep mosquitoes and ticks away. Nobody wants to be sick in bed on a beautiful summer day. Lastly, remember to stay hydrated and make sure the kids have plenty to drink. Planning ahead can make summertime a great time.
